Awka, Jan. 14, 2026 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, on Wednesday sensitised drivers, fleet managers and passengers on the dangers of drunk driving and drug abuse.
The sensitisation, which was held in Awka, was in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, said the exercise was aimed at reminding road users that driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs posed serious risks to lives and property.
Asekhauno advised drivers and park operators to discourage the sale and consumption of alcohol and drugs within motor parks.
According to her, statistics from 2025 indicate that drunk driving and speeding were among the leading causes of road traffic crashes in the country.
“We are here to talk to drivers, fleet managers and passengers to remind them that drunk driving is dangerous.
“We also brought breathalysers to test drivers and determine the level of alcohol in their blood. The permissible blood alcohol level is 0.5 per cent,” she said.
She explained that the collaboration with NDLEA was necessary because driving required full concentration, which could be impaired by alcohol and unwholesome drugs.
In her presentation, Mrs Priscilla Onyema, Chief Superintendent of Narcotics, and the Officer in charge of Training, Media and Advocacy at the NDLEA, Anambra State Command, said the sensitisation was to educate drivers on the health and safety implications of drug consumption.
Onyema warned that substance abuse could affect judgment, coordination and reaction time, thereby increasing the likelihood of road accidents.
Also speaking, Dr Reginald Facah, Coordinator, MTN/CCGE/Community Liaison Initiative, said the organisation was committed to promoting road safety and responsible driving habits.
Facah said the initiative was aimed at ensuring that drivers avoided drinking and driving and adhered strictly to safe driving ethics to preserve lives and property.
Mr Oje Alexander, Logistics Manager, Rivers Joy Travel and Tour, on behalf of transport operators, commended FRSC and NDLEA for the enlightenment.
Alexander said the sensitisation reinforced the company’s policy of not allowing any driver seen with alcohol bottles to load or drive vehicles.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FRSC officials tested all drivers at the park with breathalysers.(NAN)
