Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun has called for closer collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to strengthen inter-agency operations and enhance safety along border corridors in the state.

Mr Odunsi Afolabi, the FRSC Public Education Officer in Ogun, disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

Afolabi said the Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, made the call during a familiarization and courtesy visit to the NCS, Ogun I Area Command in Idiroko.

He said the visit, which followed Ogunjobi’s assumption of office on April 11, was aimed at strengthening existing ties between the two agencies and improving operational efficiency.

According to him, both agencies highlighted the importance of their complementary roles in ensuring public safety and national security.

To deepen collaboration, Ogunjobi outlined key areas of cooperation, including joint patrols and vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness and proper documentation, especially along border routes.

He also proposed improved intelligence sharing on vehicle smuggling, traffic offences and suspicious cross-border activities.

Other areas include joint training programmes on road safety standards and vehicle inspection techniques, as well as coordinated public enlightenment campaigns targeting motorists and border communities.

The sector commander further advocated the establishment of a joint rapid response mechanism to address road crashes and security incidents along the Lagos–Idi-Iroko corridor.

Ogunjobi emphasized the need for professionalism, reiterating the corps’ zero-tolerance stance on extortion and unprofessional conduct, while assuring the Customs command of a transparent and result-driven partnership.

Responding, the Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Mr Oladapo Afeni, commended the initiative and pledged the command’s full support.

Afeni also assured of an open-door policy to sustain collaboration between both agencies.

He said both organizations had agreed to set up a joint technical committee to drive the implementation of the proposed strategies.

According to him, the renewed partnership is expected to enhance road safety, strengthen border security and support revenue generation in the state. (NAN)
