The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on motorists and other road users to maintain speed limit during the `Ember Months’ in order to avoid road crashes.
Mr. Sikiru Alonge, the FRSC Unit Commander in Ore, Ondo State, gave the advice on Thursday at the inauguration of the Ember Months Sensitization in Ore.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Ember Months campaign is titled: “Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience”.
Alonge said that according to FRSC records, road crashes are always on the rise during the ‘Ember Months: September, October, November and December, because of speed, bad roads, disobedience to traffic rules and other factors.
“Road crashes are always on the rise during the Ember Months according to our record, because of speed, bad roads, disobedience to traffic rules by drivers and other road users among others.
“WHO record shows that high numbers of people are killed through road crashes annually across the globe within developing countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Sierra Leone and others because of the factors above.
“But it has been observed in our jurisdiction here that the major cause of road crashes along Ore-Benin corridor is excessive speed because of the good road network.
“As a result of deaths, injuries and wanton loss of properties emanating from road crashes within this corridor, the FRSC will no longer fold its arms while these occurrences negate our vision,” Alonge said.
He, however, urged all drivers to install the speed limiting governor or devices in their vehicles in other to reduce excessive speed on the highway in order to save more lives and property.
He charged FRSC personnel to redouble efforts in enforcing and arresting any erring motorist flouting the speed limit rules on the expressway.
NAN reports that Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, other security agencies, Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers and other road users were present at the programme. (NAN)
