Nasarawa State House of Assembly says it will support the Hope Foundation of Gov. Abdullahi Sule’s wife, Silifat, in its fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the state.
This, the House said, is to protect women and the girl child against all forms of violence to build an egalitarian society for peace and progress to thrive.
Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House, gave the assurance during Hajiya Silifat Sule’s 16 days Activism Campaign Against Violence, to the State House of Assembly on Monday in Lafia.
Abdullahi, who was represented by Mr. Daniel Ogazi, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, said that violence against women and girls has affected their lives negatively and the development of the society hence the need for all hands to be on deck to end the menace.
“We want to commend Her Excellency in her fight against rape and all forms of Violence in the state.
“Her Excellency’s efforts and continued fight is to ensure that there is no violence against women and girls in the state.
“We are happy with her initiative and movement.
“We will give you all the legislations and other necessary support to end violence against women and girls in the interest of peace and for the overall development of the state,” he said.
Abdullahi called on security agencies to bring perpetrators of rape and other forms of violence against women to book to serve as a deterrent to others.
Earlier, Hajiya Silifat, founder of Hope Foundation, said that the campaign is aimed at saying no to violence against women in the state.
The governor’s wife, who spoke through the wife of the State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Tosim Akabe, solicited for the support of the assembly and other stakeholders to end violence against women in the state.
The governor’s wife restated her continued commitment and campaign against violence against women and girls in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign rally was attended by the wife of the Speaker of the State Assembly Hajiya Maryam Balarabe Abdullahi, among other women, who carried placards with different inscriptions such as, “say no to violence against women and girls”, “prevent and respond to Gender Base Violence (GBV),” “Silifat Stands against GBV”, among others.
