Ulm (Germany Jan. 16, 2024 (dpa/NAN) The verdict for the 2021 synagogue arson case is expected on Tuesday in the southern German city of Ulm, in the case that started more than two years ago.
The prosecution accused a Turkish man of acting out of a motive of anti-Semitism by pouring gasoline along the wall of the synagogue in June 2021.
The crime caused burn marks on the wall, and a window was clouded with dust.
The accused refused to respond to questions in court but provided detailed information during a pre-trial psychiatric examination.
The psychiatric expert gave evidence at the start of the trial in December, saying the accused had claimed that he wanted to draw the attention of the people
The attention was for people to see the sufferings of Palestinians in their conflict with Israel.
The prosecution had called for a sentence of two years and nine months on a charge of attempted arson and damage to property.
The defence called for a fine to be imposed.
The man fled to Turkey following the attack on the synagogue but was detained upon returning to Germany at the beginning of July last year.
The Ulm arson case that caused outrage in Germany came less than two years after the October 2019 synagogue shooting in the city of Halle that left two people dead. (dpa/NAN)
