Germany’s public sector workers wage negotiations enter 3rd round

  • The third round of collective bargaining talks for German public sector workers is set to begin on Friday, following weeks marked by strikes across the country.

Employers and trade unions are to meet in Potsdam, outside Berlin, for a planned three days of negotiations.

Shortly before the start of the talks, the civil service union dbb, which is negotiating alongside the public service trade union verdi, warned of a possible breakdown of the talks and escalation in the labor dispute.

The negotiations cover the income and working hours of more than 2.5 million employees in sectors including administration, childcare, public transport, waste management, and care facilities.

The unions are demanding an 8 percent pay rise for employees, or an increase of at least 350 euros (365 U.S dollars) per month, as well as three additional days of annual leave.

The deputy chair of the German Trade Union Confederation, Elke Hannack, said: “If you want an effective state that is capable of acting, you must not save on personnel and modern equipment under any circumstances.”

She said public administration, childcare centers, schools, courts, police, and local administrative offices have been running on wear and tear for years.

The employers believe the demands are too expensive but have not yet made a counteroffer.

If no agreement can be reached, unions could call for further strikes, or arbitration proceedings could be initiated to seek compromises. (dpa/NAN)
