Gov. Oborevwori counsels corp members on self employment, self reliance

Asaba, Jan. 23, 2026 (NAN) Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has advised corps members serving in the state to shun all acts capable of endangering their safety, undermining the peace, unity, and progress of Nigeria.

Oborevwori gave the advice on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of ‘Batch A’ ‘Stream 1’ of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the orientation camp in Issele-Uku.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr ThankGod Trakiriowei, urged the corps members to uphold the highest standards of discipline, loyalty, dedication and patriotism.

According to him, the nation is in urgent need of young men and women, who are prepared to drive development through honesty, innovation, and strong moral character.

Oborevwori said: “Beyond fostering unity, tolerance, and cooperation, the orientation programme is structured to promote national integration and sustainable development.

“During this period, you will be exposed to critical issues relating to security awareness, leadership, entrepreneurship, national economy, and personal development.

“You will also gain valuable insights into the culture, traditions, and hospitality of the people of Delta State.”

He urged the corps members to remain diligent, disciplined, and committed throughout the orientation course.

“The values of discipline, teamwork, resilience, and leadership you acquire will enhance your effectiveness during your service year and serve you in your future pursuits.

“These experiences will equip you with the skills and mindset needed to make meaningful contributions to national development.

“It will also align with our administration’s development and transformation agenda,” he said.

Oborevwori said that the scheme remained a vital pillar of their service year.

The governor emphasised that the scheme was designed to provide them with the physical, emotional, and psychological preparation required not only for the tasks they would undertake during the service year but also for life beyond.

“I, therefore, urge you to participate actively in all camp activities and to interact freely with one another, as the camp environment mirrors the rich cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity of Nigeria.

“Delta State is a land of immense opportunities, and I encourage you to make the most of your deployment to this great state,” he said.

He assured the NYSC leadership that the state Government would continue to fulfil its obligations towards the scheme for the corps members to enjoy a safe, productive, and rewarding service year.

He further assured corps members that the projects currently ongoing in the camp would be completed and ready for use before the next orientation exercise.

“I am aware of some of the challenges currently confronting this camp, particularly the inadequacy of certain facilities.

“Accordingly, I have approved the construction of a perimeter fence to enhance security and curb vandalism, in addition to the upgrading of other critical camp facilities,” he said.

The state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr John Kwange, commended the governor for “the good works he has been doing in the camp”.

Kwange, however, appealed for additional borehole in the orientation camp to address water shortage issues.

“We currently rely on one borehole for water supply in the camp.

“One borehole, particularly, during the dry seasons when the water table is low, has been a source of concern for the camp community.

“With the increasing corps population, there is urgent need for an additional borehole in the camp for a reliable water supply,” he said.

Kwange said that a total of 1,850 prospective corps members, comprising 771 males and 1,079 females, were registered.(NAN)
