The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Sector Command, on Monday flagged-off a three–day special operation to reduce crashes on highways across the state.
Dr Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC State Sector Commander, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Akure during the flag-off, said the exercise was named ‘Operation Sanity’.
Ibitoye said the operation would not be on broad road safety activities, but would focus only on the common causes of road traffic crashes caused by road users.
He said the command had identified some offences through research that caused crashes in the state, and explained that the enforcement of those offences was tailored to bringing down crashes on highways.
The sector commander also said motorists caught violating the traffic offences, especially those engaging in over speeding and dangerous driving, would be booked, fined and sanctioned during the operation.
“The operation is only focused on speed violation; dangerous driving; overloading; tyre relative offences; driving under influence of alcohol; seat belt violation; use of phone while driving; route violation and vehicle smoking excessively.
“We will educate motorists during the operation. For those engaging in overloading, they should know that as it is affecting the vehicle, it is also affecting the road itself and puts the lives of occupants of such vehicle in jeopardy.
“So, I want to encourage motorists to always be patient, take ownership of road safety and shun whatsoever that could distract them while on the wheel.
“The aim of the operation is to reduce the traffic crashes to a minimum rate on highways and Nigerian roads at large,” he said.
Ibitoye, therefore, called on motorists to drive carefully and behave positively, so that the roads would be safer for everyone and other road users. (NAN).
