A husband, Umar Lala, 49, on Thursday, appeared before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Wuse, Abuja, charged with assault and causing hurt to his estranged wife.
The defendant, a resident of No. 26, Jamere Close, Area 11 Gariki, Abuja, pleaded not guilty to the two counts of assault and causing hurt levelled against him.
The Prosecutor, Festus Ajayi told the court that Hafsat Muhammad, of the same address, reported the matter at Gariki Police station, on May 22.
Ajayi told the court that the complainant reported that defendant on the fateful day beat her and she sustained injury on her left shoulder and had to be taken to hospital
He further told the court that N28,000 was spent for treatment of Muhammad at the hospital.
The prosecutor added that the complainant alleged that she later discovered her N60,000 kept in the house missing after the incident.
Ajayi said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 265 and 240 of the Penal Code.
Ruling on the bail application, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ekpeyong Inyang, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million, and with one surety in like sum.
She ordered that the surety must be a civil servant, and must provide a National Identity Card, and letter of introduction from the organizations he/she works.
The magistrate also directed that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and his address verified by its official.
Inyang subsequently adjourned the case until July 24, for hearing. (NAN)
