The House of Representatives has urged President Bola Tinubu to immortalise Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, ex-National Electoral Commission’s (NEC) chairman, who presided over the June 12, 1993 general elections.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Rep. Peter Uzokwe and Rep. Clara  Nnabuife on the floor of the House in Abuja on Tuesday.

It would be recalled that Nwosu was appointed the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC) Chairman from 1989 to 1993 by the Military President, Ibrahim Babangida.

Presenting his motion, he said it was cognizant of the various efforts made by the previous administrations to immortalize those that fought for the democracy were all beneficiaries.

He added that an edifice like the Abuja Stadium was named after the winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, Chief Moshood Abiola by former President Muhamadu Buhari.

He further said that Buhari demonstrated an honest remorsefulness of the injustice of June 12, 1993 by changing Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 which was celebrated with all sense of pride in 2024 by Tinubu.

He added that Tinubu was part of the struggle of June 12, 1993.

He bemoaned the continued neglect of Nwosu, who put his life on the line to see that justice was not only done but seen to be done.

According to him, the National Anthem was changed, and we all pray to God to help us to build a nation where no man is oppressed, yet Nwosu is still not celebrated while he is alive.

Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Government to immortalize Nwosu when he is still alive and give him a national honour.

The House also urged the Federal Government to name the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters after Nwosu.

The House urged the Federal Government to invite Nwosu to every Democracy Day celebration. (NAN)
