The Imo House of Assembly on Thursday called for the urgent rehabilitation of the road linkingĀ Emekuku, Emii and Ulakwo communities in Owerri North Local Government Area.
The house made the call following a motion moved by the Owerri North representative at the assembly, Mr Kelechi Ofurum (APC-Owerri North)
Ofurum while moving the motion said that theĀ road was a major access that connected two federal roads: the Owerri-Umuahia road and Owerri-Aba road.
He said that erosion and flooding had collapsed a major part of the road.
He expressed worry that farmers, school children, elderly people, commuters and other strategic users that transit goods and services through the road found it difficult, especially during rainy season.
āThe road has become a security risk to people that ply it.Ā The frequency of criminal activities has increased with the dilapidated condition of the road,ā he said.
Ofurum prayed the house to urge Gov. Hope Uzodimma, to mandate the state Ministries of Works, Transport, Environment, and other related Agencies and Parastatals to immediately commence the rehabilitation of the road to forestall further loss of lives and properties.
Government, he said, should also mandate the ministries to capture the rehabilitation of theĀ road in the subsequent budgets.
Supporting the motion, Mr James Esile (APC-Onuimo) said there was need to ensure farmers easily transport their produce from the villages to cushion the effects of food scarcity.
Esile called for immediate action to ensure the road was rehabilitated as soon as possible.
Contributing,Ā the Orlu representative,Ā Dr Ikenna Ihezuo (APC) said rehabilitating the road would ensure easy access to the state capital.
Following votes in support of the motion, the Speaker, Mr Chike Olemgbe (APC-Ihitte Uboma) ruled in its favour.
He directed the Clerk to convey the resolution of the house to the office of the governor. (NAN)
