Lagos, January 6, 2024: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has fulfilled its legal obligation by publishing the notice of the Surulere Federal Constituency I bye-election. Mrs. Adenike Oriowo, INEC Public Affairs Officer in Lagos State, confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the notice was displayed on Thursday at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo-Yaba for public viewing.

Oriowo stated, “The notice has also been posted at the commission’s Surulere Local Government Area Office. Section 28 (3) of the Electoral Act 2022 provides that this should be done not later than 14 days before the election.”

INEC has initiated the implementation of activities and timetable for the upcoming bye-election, with preparations in full swing to ensure strict adherence to relevant laws and guidelines governing the poll. The spokesperson affirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering a credible bye-election in the Surulere Federal Constituency.

The election, set to take place on February 3, 2024, is part of INEC’s scheduled re-run and by-elections across nine states, including the Surulere Federal Constituency in Lagos State. The timetable outlines that party primary elections, along with the resolution of disputes arising from the primaries, will occur between January 5 and January 9.

Public campaigns by political parties are slated to commence on January 18, concluding on February 1. The Surulere seat became vacant following the resignation of the former occupant, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, who, upon winning, was appointed as Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu. The upcoming bye-election holds significant importance in the democratic process, and INEC is diligently working to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral exercise.
