Injury Blow for Nigerian Midfielder Wilfred Ndidi

Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who plays for Leicester City, faces a three-month absence from the pitch due to a muscle injury. The 27-year-old missed Leicester’s recent Championship victory over Huddersfield and has been replaced in Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad by Alhassan Yusuf from Royal Antwerp.

Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca expressed concern about Ndidi’s extended absence, stating, “For Wilf, it will be a long time. It could be three months. It looks like a muscle problem, but an important one, so we now see in the next hours.”

Ndidi, an integral part of Leicester’s table-topping team, may miss a significant portion of the remaining 20 league games this season. The FA Cup winner has made 24 appearances this season, contributing with four goals and six assists.

In addition to Ndidi’s injury setback, doubts surround the availability of Kelechi Iheanacho for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to an injury concern. The Nigerian Eagles are currently in Abu Dhabi, UAE, for a one-week training camp ahead of the AFCON 2023. As part of their preparations, the team is set to face Guinea in a friendly game on Monday, January 8.

The AFCON 2023 tournament is scheduled to kick off on January 13 and conclude on February 11, 2024.
