Insecurity: Ondo Assembly promises support for Safe Schools Initiative

Akure, March 11, 2026( NAN) The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, has assured the Assembly’s support towards initiatives aimed at strengthening security in schools across the state.

Oladiji expressed the legislative body’s readiness to support move that would guarantee conducive learning environment for students and teachers across the state.

The Speaker gave the assurance while hosting Mrs Folasade Olakanse, the Coordinator of the Safe School Response Coordination Centre for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Ondo State, at the Assembly on Wednesday in Akure.

He noted that security remained a major concern for Nigerians, adding that the initiative would help reduce incidents of kidnapping, banditry and other forms of criminal activities threatening schools and communities across the country.

Oladiji stated that the Assembly remained committed to the welfare and safety of the people of the state, assuring that protecting lives and property remained critical responsibility of government and lawmakers.

He urged officials of the center to always reach out to the House whenever there was need and to keep the Assembly informed about the programmes and activities of the centre.

Earlier in her remarks, Olakanse explained that the centre was introduced by the Federal Government with the aim of strengthening security in both public and private schools across the country.

Olakanse, the Deputy Commander, NSCDC, noted that the centre was responsible for coordinating security agencies to safeguard schools and conduct risk assessments of educational institutions.

She added that the centre would also provide timely reports on schools that required urgent security intervention, as well as infrastructural improvements such as perimeter fencing, access control and other safety measures.

Olakanse explained that the centre recognized the importance of legislators as key stakeholders and implementing partners in ensuring the success of the initiative, hence the visit to the Assembly. (NAN)
