The National President of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Isah Abubakar, has called for greater youth inclusion and improved governance as Nigerians mark democracy day on June 12.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kaduna, Abubakar said the annual celebration provided an opportunity to assess democratic progress and address challenges affecting citizens, particularly young people.
He noted that democracy should continue to deliver tangible benefits through improved security, economic opportunities and social development.
According to him, many young Nigerians remain concerned about unemployment and limited opportunities in spite of their educational qualifications.
He said efforts aimed at expanding job creation and empowering youths would strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions.
The NYCN president also stressed the need for adequate welfare packages for workers and retirees who had contributed to national development.
He said improving the welfare of security personnel and pensioners would enhance morale and service delivery.
Abubakar further called for sustained investments in education, healthcare and critical infrastructure across the country.
He said accessible and quality public services remained essential to national growth and social stability.
The youth leader urged stakeholders to work together to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure greater accountability in governance.
He also advocated continuous reforms that would promote transparency, justice and equitable development.
Abubakar acknowledged ongoing efforts by government at various levels to address national challenges.
However, he stressed the need for accelerated action to meet the expectations of citizens, especially young people.
He called on elected officials, community leaders and public institutions to prioritize policies that improve living standards.
According to him, inclusive governance and responsive leadership are critical to sustaining democracy and national unity.
Abubakar urged security agencies to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities of protecting lives and property.
He expressed optimism that with collective commitment, Nigeria would continue to strengthen its democratic journey and achieve sustainable development.
The NYCN president also encouraged citizens to actively participate in nation-building and support initiatives that promote peace and progress.
