Kano Govt inaugurates committee on OGP to boost transparency, accountability

Kano, April 2, 2026 (NAN) The Kano State Government, has inaugurated a State Steering Committee of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), to strengthen transparency, accountability and citizen participation in governance.

Speaking at the inauguration in Kano on Thursday, Dr Nura Iro-Ma’aji, the  State Commissioner for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation, said the initiative was to  improve governance.

“It will also ensure transparent management of public resources for the benefit of the people.”

He said that the OGP was a global multilateral initiative established in 2011 to promote good governance by fostering collaboration between governments and civil society organisations.

Iro-Ma’aji said the committee included  representatives from government and civil society in line with the OGP principle of co-creation.

“The 11-member committee is chaired by Dr Iro-Ma’aji, Mr Ibrahim Waiya Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, Commissioner for Health and Dr. Dahiru Hashim, Commissioner for Environment as members.
“Other members are, Mr Musa Sulaiman-Shanono, Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Barr. Salisu Tahir, Solicitor General of Kano State, Barr. Hafsat Ada’u-Kutama, Secretary and Legal Adviser, Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.
“Abba Danguguwa Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Aminu Tafida Director Political Affairs/REPA, and Musaddiq Kabir Adam SA to Gov.Abba Kabir-Yusuf on OGP, Head of OGP Secretariat and Secretary of the State Steering Committee.”

He said the state government nominated the members to work alongside civil society members, to deliberate and implement policies that directly impact citizens.

He noted that the committee would focus on key thematic areas such as anti-corruption, fiscal responsibility, service delivery, citizen engagement, access to information, access to justice and climate change.

According to him, the committee will meet regularly to plan, review and implement initiatives.

“Through periodic assessments and engagements, participating states and countries review progress and share best practices in governance reforms” Iro-Ma’aji said

Also speaking, the Citizens’ Co-Chair of Kano OGP, Mr Abdulrazaq Alkali, said the initiative was designed to enhance transparency, improve service delivery and create an enabling environment for citizens to actively engage with government processes.

Alkali stressed that the involvement of civil society would ensure that policies and programmes reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.

He explained that the committee would operate on the principle of joint decision-making, where government and civil society agree on priorities and implementation strategies.

According to him, continuous monitoring of government activities will promote accountability and ensure that citizens remain at the centre of governance. (NAN)
