Inmates at the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre in Kano State have defeated officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in a friendly tug of war contest organized as part of ongoing recreational and rehabilitation activities.
This is contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofarnassarawa on Friday in Kano.
The event, held within the custodial facility, was jointly organized by the NCoS and the NDLEA Kano State Command.
He said the initiative formed part of sustained efforts to reform, rebrand and reposition inmates toward becoming responsible members of society, in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
According to the statement, the Controller of Corrections in the state, Mr Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the Controller-General of Corrections, Mr Sylvester Ndidi-Nwakuche, for his commitment to engaging inmates in meaningful recreational and rehabilitative programmes nationwide.
He lauded the NDLEA Kano State Commander, Mr Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, for the agency’s collaboration, particularly in sensitizing inmates on the dangers of drug abuse.
Yusuf-Lakpene said that the synergy between the NCoS and NDLEA reflected their shared mandate of reforming, rehabilitating and reintegrating inmates into society.
“The highlight of the event was the tug of war contest, where the inmates emerged victorious over the NDLEA officials, demonstrating teamwork, resilience and improved physical well-being,” the statement said.
Yusuf-Lakpene also donated a cash gift to support inmate welfare.
He reiterated the commitment of the NCoS to implementing reformative programmes that promote discipline, physical fitness and successful reintegration of inmates into society
Also, the NDLEA commander Yahaya-Lawal also presented a cash gift of N100,000 to the inmates in recognition of their performance and encouraged them to remain committed to self-improvement.(NAN)
