Ilorin, Feb. 7, 2026 (NAN)The Kwara government on Saturday commenced the distribution of fertiliser to support farmers engaged in dry season farming in the state, with a view to strengthening its drive for year-round agriculture.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Afeez Alabi, said during the distribution exercise in Ilorin that the initiative was designed to ease the burden of rising agricultural input costs.
Alabi said the fertiliser distribution was carefully structured to ensure that farmers remain productive despite prevailing market challenges.
He, however, warned farmers against selling or diverting the inputs, noting that anyone found wanting would face the full wrath of the law.
The commissioner noted that sustaining year-round farming was essential in stabilising food availability and strengthening farmers’ resilience across the state.
“The present administration is committed to practical, farmer-centred interventions that promote continuous farming, expand production capacity, and position agriculture as a key pillar of economic recovery and inclusive growth in the state.
“The state government will continue implementing sustainable agricultural interventions that promote rural development, economic recovery, and a resilient food system,” he said.
The FADAMA Programme Project Coordinator in the state, Dr Isiaka Busari, commended the state government for its leadership and effective collaboration.
Represented by FADAMA’s Head of Technical, Abdulmalik Zubairu, Busari noted that the timely intervention reflected the state’s dedication to impactful programme implementation and service delivery to farmers.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Soliu Yahaya, expressed appreciation to the state government for its sustained support to the agricultural sector.
Yahaya described the intervention as a strong motivation for farmers to intensify off-season farming, noting that improved access to fertiliser would enhance productivity and sustain livelihoods.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that farmers across the 16 Local Government Areas of Kwara benefited from the fertiliser distribution.
It is expected to support the cultivation of key crops and contribute to improved food availability across the state.
