The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified enforcement in Alimosho, arresting offenders and sealing properties over environmental violations.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, LAWMA, Mr Mukaila Sanusi.

The statement was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

Sanusi said the operation, led by LAWMA’s Project W.I.S.E (West) team, targeted indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal dumping across Ikotun axis and adjoining communities.

“During night surveillance, a 15-year-old boy, (name withheld) was apprehended while dumping waste at Ikotun-Egbe roundabout around 10:00 p.m.

“He was handed over to the Task Force office in Oshodi for appropriate action,” Sanusi said.

He said the team also sealed a car lot at Iroko Estate, LASU-Isheri Road, for discharging waste into drainage systems.

“A furniture showroom was similarly sealed for environmental infractions related to improper waste disposal.

“An intention-to-seal notice was issued to a mini store at Diamond Estate for failing to patronize a registered PSP operator.

“The action followed complaints from residents of Kaslat/Sarumi Street over illegal dumping and burning of waste on a gated undeveloped plot.

“LAWMA sealed the property and arrested a 65-year-old security guard, Abubakar Yunusa, found complicit in the activity,” Sanusi said.

He quoted the Managing Director of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, as reaffirming the agency’s commitment to sustained enforcement across the state.

Gbadegesin warned that illegal dumping, waste burning and use of unregistered waste handlers remained punishable offences under Lagos environmental laws.

He urged residents to use accredited PSP operators and report infractions through official channels.

He added that LAWMA would continue to respond to complaints and strengthen collaboration with communities for a cleaner environment.(NAN)
