Residents of Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State have been advised to make proper use of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) to protect themselves against malaria. .
The wife of the chairman of the council, Mrs. Morenike Ajimotokin, gave the advice on Monday at Irele during the inauguration and distribution of free treated mosquito nets in the area.
The nets were provided by the council in partnership with a donor, Give Well Implementation Malaria Consortium.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 124, 200 ITNs were distributed during the inauguration.
Ajimotokin said malaria had become a major public health concern especially as it was one of the leading causes of maternal and child deaths in the country..
She said the disease was preventable and treatable, adding that the use of treated nets would significantly reduce the risk of contracting it.
“Malaria is one of the leading causes maternal and child death in our society.
“Malaria is preventable and curable, these free nets distributed is an opportunity to reduce the high number of malaria cases to minimum in our council.
“This is why we must use these treated nets judiciously in order to d rid of malaria from our area,” she said.
Ajimotokin appreciated the efforts of Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the Wife of Ondo State Governor, the state’s ministry for health, Irele LGA Primary Health Care Agency, among others for their support for the project
