Man, 56, arraigned over alleged stealing , threat to life

A 56-year-old man, Hakeem Shittu, on Friday stood in the dock  of a grade A Customary Court in Mapo Ibadan, over charges of alleged stealing and threat to life preferred against him by the police.

Shittu is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on the alleged offences.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court’s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with two reliable sureties in like sum.

She added that the sureties must each provide evidence of tax payment to the Oyo State government, and must also possess a National Identification Number (NIN).

The court, consequently, adjourned the matter until Aug. 25, for trial.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Ayodele Ayeni had told the court that the defendant committed the offences between March and July 3, at Popoyemoja in Ibadan.

He alleged that the defendant stole a 6kg gas cylinder worth N28,000, 3kg gas cylinder worth N23,000 as well as an Itel phone worth N15,000 totaling N66,000.

The items are said to be owned by one Adesewa Sofola.

The prosecutor also alleged that the defendant stole two other gas cylinders valued at N63,000, belonging to one Mr Samuel Adebayo.

The defendant was also alleged to have threatened the life of the second complainant, (Adebayo) with a matchet, after the latter confronted him.

The offences contravene the provisions of sections 86 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Law of Oyo State 2000. (NAN).
