A 57-year-old man, Ojo Bamidele, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining the sum of N2.75 million by false pretense.
The defendant, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a four-count charge of obtaining money by false pretense and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Adegeshin Famuyiwa, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 25, at No 77, Yemi Alimi str, in Ikorodu, Lagos.
He alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N2.55 million from the complainant, Mrs. Kehinde Mosunmola, under the pretense of supplying her with 30 bags of rice and 50 kegs of 30 liters each of groundnut oil, knowing the claim to be false.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant also obtained N200,000 from another complainant, Mrs Kehinde Remilekun, under the pretense of using the money to transport her goods to Ekiti State, knowing same to be false.
He said that the defendant was eventually arrested by the police.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene the provisions of sections 314, 287, 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Magistrate, Mr A.O. Ogbe, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that addresses of the sureties must be verified and adjourned the case until May 7, for mention. (NAN)
