Man docked for allegedly cheating another of N2 m over non-existent job

Abuja, July 28, 2025(NAN) The Police on Monday arraigned Mr Ogar Olofu before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Wuse, Abuja, for allegedly cheating one Ogor Matthew of N2million over non-existent job.

The police charged the defendant with criminal breach of trust, cheating, misappropriation and intimidation.

The prosecuting counsel, Emmanuel Nnamani, said that the complainant, Matthe,w petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Feb.4.

Nnamani alleged that the defendant induced the complainant and collected N2,056,000 from him under the pretence that there was a job opportunity at Olvea Group, at Burkina Faso, in November 2023.

He added that the defendant gave the complainant a fake appointment letter, but when he got to Burkinafaso, he discovered that it was false and was arrested and detained until Nov.4, 2024.

The prosecution counsel said that when the complainant arrived in Nigeria, he called the defendant, but he threatened to kill him if he continued to disturb him.

He said that the defendant became unreachable until he was seen at Nyanya, Abuja and was arrested on July 21.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 312, 322,309, 161 and 397 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

The defence counsel, C.O. Ogboji made a bail application citing sections 36(5) of the 1999 constitution, 158 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act ( ACJA).

Ogboji said that the defendant had been diligent and did not jump police bail, adding that he had sureties in court to stand for him if granted bail.

The Magistrate, Abubakar Sadiq, granted the defendant N1 million bail with two sureties who must be employees of a public or private organisation.

Sadiq ordered that the each of the sureties must present his/her appointment letter, while the second surety must produce NIN and swear to an affidavit of means of livelihood.

He adjourned the matter until Sept.8 for hearing. (NAN)
