Military shut Yola Airport, prevent Nyako from travelling

orts out of Yola indicate that the Nigerian military have shut down Yola International Airport – a move that prevented the state governor, Murtala Nyako from taking off to Abuja Wednesday morning where he was expected to attend a meeting initiated by former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

A staff at the airport said that the airport has been shut against all commercial and private plane movements, based on orders from ‘above’.

He said Air Force personnel stormed the airport early in the morning and asked staff to leave the control tower. They also put the entrance to the airport terminal under lock.

Nyako was supposed to have attended the ‘Save School Initiative’ which is aimed at boosting school enrolemt in the north-eastern part of the country.

Nyako’s counterparts from Yobe, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam and Borno, Alhaji Kashim Shettima where both at the Presidential Villa, along with Brown, who is the UN’s Envoy on Global Education to see President Goodluck Jonathan over the issue of child education in the three states.

Meanwhile, the Adamawa State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Nyako, and his deputy, Bala Ngilari.

The Assembly on Wednesday directed its clerk to serve Messrs Nyako and Ngilari with an impeachment notice.

Nyako has been having a running battle with the lawmakers since he left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to join the All Progressives Congress.
