My neighbour was lying in a pool of blood, witness testifies in murder of Arise News anchor

Abuja, Feb.10, 2026 (NAN) An engineer, Sani Yusuf, on Tuesday, described how he found his neighbour,
Arise News correspondent, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, in pool of blood in their house.
Yusuf was testifying in an Abuja High Court while being led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Adama Musa.
The Commissioner of Police charged Shamsu Hassan, Sani Surajo, Hassan Isah, Abubakar Alkamu and Abdulsalam Saleh with nine counts bordering on armed robbery and culpable homicide punishable by death.
Others charged were Suleiman Badamosi, Zaradeen Mohammed, Musa Umar, Mashikur Jamil, Suleiman Sani, and Abubakar Usman.
Yusuf said that he was asleep in his bedroom at Unique Apartment, Katampe on Sept.29, 2025 when he heard noises in the house.
“I heard a gun shot, strange voices speaking Hausa and a loud bang on my door. I was shocked to see strange men in my house shouting where are you? come out!.
” They entered my bedroom and asked for my phones and computer, I gave them my S25 Galaxy and my Macbook Air while the one holding the pistol asked me to transfer money to him but the other said no and asked them to leave.
“I heard voices and screams around the apartment while the operation was going on in my room, that was when I realised there were a lot of them.
 “I heard a scream of a female, the scream stopped after about 15 minutes later but before then I heard a lady screaming for help and noticed the security guard, Joshua saying the other guard, Barnabas Danlami had been shot.
“At this time the robbers had left, so I came out and on my right I saw my neighbour .
Yusuf said he ran towards another neighbour who was helping Danlami (the guard) with his wounds from a gun shot.
He said another neighbour brought out his car and they took the guard to the Maitama district hospital.
He added that Maduagwu had a serious trauma on her head and was later confirmed dead.
Also testifying, another resident of Unique Apartment, Fatou Toborteh said that she heard screams and loud noises while in bed at her flat with her aunt and children on Sept.29 at about 3a.m.
” I heard a bang on my door and got up, opened the bedroom door and walked towards the living room and coincided with a man opening the front door and he asked for money and my phone which I pointed to on the floor.
“I did not have any cash on me so he opened the drawers in my room and saw my car keys and wallet.he took both but I found my wallet at the entrance of the flat with my debit card on the floor.
“One of the robbers also entered my aunt’s bedroom and took a gold plated wristwatch, an IPhone 11 promax and a Samsung phone from her and a lap top and some cash from my 14-year-old daughter’s room.
” They also opened my bedside drawer and found N55,000 cash and took it then left and went downstairs with my car keys CRV Toyota Honda.
“We were petrified after they left and opened the balcony and saw a lady lying down with blood around her head we went back to our living room but didn’t know who fell and later heard from the neighbours that it was Maduagwu .
“We also learnt that Danlami was shot and the neighbours attempted to call the police and Maduagwu and Danlami were taken to the hospital,” she said.
The defence counsels, Agbocheni Samson
Ojonimi Apeh, Dennis Abu and Seidu Alpha said that they did not have any cross examination for the witnesses.
Justice Mohammed Idris however adjourned the matter until Feb.12 for hearing.( NAN)
