NAN, firm trains staff on data security

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in collaboration with an Information Technology firm, Bisly Nigeria Ltd, has trained its staff on Nigeria Data Protection Regulatory Compliance, to entrench data security.

Mr Gabriel Alagbe, Assistant Director, Information and Communication Technology, NAN, said in Abuja on Thursday, that the training was in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

Alagbe said at the end of the two-day training, which had participants from all the departments of the agency, that the move was to ensure optimal security of data in the agency.

He commended NAN management for the efforts to ensure compliance to the Nigeria’s data protection law, in line with best practices.

“The training has improved our understanding of how to handle and transmit data in a safe and secure manner, in line with provisions of the law,” he said.

On his part, Dr Henry Chuba, Senior Data Protection Consultant, Bisly Nigeria Ltd, described data protection as a set of procedures aimed at safeguarding personal data stored within a system.

Chuba explained that the measure was to safeguard important data from corruption, compromise or loss.

He added that data protection also provides the capability to restore data to a functional state when it becomes inaccessible or unusable.

He pointed out that President Bola Tinubu signed the data protection act into law, to secure the country’s data in line with best practices and directed all Ministries, Department and Agencies to comply.

The consultant said that the law provided for an annual data protection audit for both private and public organisations in the country.

The goal, according to him, is to ensure compliance with the provisions of the law.

“This is necessary because the federal government wants to ensure that information is not being leaked to unauthorised individuals or organisations, but are guided, protected, and safeguarded.”

Chuba explained that the training targeted the middle management level officers of the agency because “they are the ones running the operations of the agency.”

One of the participants, Mrs Lara Olaniyi, from the Marketing Department, commended NAN and the IT firm for organising the training which she described as “eye opener.”

“This training has been impactful, enlightening and an eye opener.

“I have learnt so much, especially what to do with personal information, how I can manage my clientele information accurately and how I can protect their data,” she said.

Mr Dennis Pollyn, in the Administration Department, said that the training has improved his knowledge on how to guard the agency’s data against fraudsters and hackers. (NAN)
