NDLEA says over 2000 Drug Traffickers have been arrested In 5 months

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in its efforts to combat use of illicit drugs in the country, has revealed that it has yielded over 2,180 arrests of drug traffickers and seized over 2 million kilograms of illicit drugs within five months.

The Chairman of the agency, Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd) made the disclosure yesterday ahead of the 2021 World Drug Day scheduled for June 26.

Gen. Marwa however opposed demands for the legalization of cannabis in Nigeria, noting that the nation cannot afford to mortgage the lives of the citizens for financial gains by legalizing cannabis.

He further revealed that a new trend in abuse has emerged in Kogi state where youths engage in smoking a local substance called “lope’ which looks like marijuana adding that the youths taking such substances believe the drug fortifies them.

In his remarks Oliver Stope from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said Nigeria Drug Use Survey 2018 revealed a drug use prevalence of 14.4 percent among Nigerians aged between 15 and 64 years.
