The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training, the August edition of the bi-monthly Public Relations Clinic, was held at the corps command headquarters in Lagos.
NAN also reports that the theme of the clinic was: ”Private Security Guard Company Operations in Nigeria: Effectiveness, Challenges and Contribution to National Security.”
In his opening remark, the Lagos State Commandant, Mr Adedotun Keshinro, explained that the regulation of private security companies in Nigeria was one of the core mandates of the NSCDC.
Keshinro said it was necessary and essential for the NSCDC to get experts to further educate its officials and the public on the roles of ”this” sector of security in the country.
He said that this would enhance the activities of the NSCDC, noting that the command had intensified intelligence gathering for protection as it was safer and cheaper to prevent.
He said that intelligence gathering had assisted in stemming the tides of vandalism and fire incident in the recent time.
In his keynote address, Adedeji Oyenuga, a Professor of Criminology, Department of Sociology, Lagos State University, said that private security companies had been underrepresented in the country.
Oyenuga said that private security companies had not been given the required accolades they deserved.
“Private security companies are an extension of law enforcement in Nigeria and we need to give them the recognition they deserve for them to do more than they are already doing,” he said.
He added that with the right recognition of private security companies, law enforcement would be easier.
”Lots of private companies will become better with the right recognition from government,” he said.
He said that laws that were controlling the private security companies were already in place, adding that the NSCDC would come up with different standard to help them improve in their works.(NAN)
