The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has offered free medical services to 1,500 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri, Borno.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was conducted at Teachers’ Village IDPs camp in Pompomari area of Maiduguri under the scheme’s Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).
Mr. Nura Umar, NYSC Coordinator in the state, disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the exercise on Tuesday in Maiduguri.
Umar, represented by Mr. Bitrus Daniel, Assistant Director, Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, said the exercise was designed to reach out to the less privilege and vulnerable to enhance access to quality healthcare services.
He said that the exercise also provided the opportunity to sensitize the people on hygiene and disease preventive tips.
While reiterating the commitment of the scheme to continue to impact positively on the lives of the people in the host communities, Umar urged government and other stakeholders to support the scheme in enhancing quality healthcare service delivery in rural communities.
Some of the beneficiaries commended the gesture, adding that it would improve their social and economic wellbeing.
Bukar Umar, a beneficiary, called for the expansion of the programme to enable more people to benefit from the exercise.
NAN reports that some of the services provided by corps medical volunteer team during the outreach included medical check up and tests as well as defensing of drugs and referrals. (NAN)
