NYSC tasks Corps members to promote nationalism, unity

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has urged Corps members undergoing orientation course in Gombe State to promote nationalism, unity and peaceful co-existence in the country.

Mrs Ada Imoni, the State Coordinator of the Scheme, made the call on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2021 Batch ‘C’ Stream II Corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, Amada in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe.

Imoni said that as corps members, youth and other members of the communities in the state would be looking up to them for mentorship and leadership.

According to her, corps members must always be seen to be promoting issues that highlight national interest which would help foster unity and peaceful coexistence amongst the people.

She said that it was in the light of that NYSC always instil discipline in corps members to equip them with the needed skills to foster national unity and integration.

“Naming your platoons after the core values of the NYSC is a deliberate effort to ensure that corps members internalise the ideals of the scheme.

“Your call-up to serve our dear nation is an attestation of your patriotism and belief in the enthronement of a united, hate-free and egalitarian Nigeria,” she said.

She tasked the corps members to learn the leadership training while undergoing the orientation course, adding that such would help them “learn more about leadership abilities and how best to solve collective problems.”

Imoni further charged the corps members to adhere strictly to the COVID-19 safety measures by “correctly and regularly” wearing their facemask and other safety protocols during and after orientation course.

The Coordinator warned that defaulters would be sanctioned, adding that hand washing facilities and sanitiser had been provided around the camp.

In his remarks,  the Acting Chief Judge of the state, Mu’azu Pindiga while administering oaths to the corps members, urged them to be their brothers’ keeper and regard fellow Nigerians as brothers and sisters.

Pindiga charged the corps members to see themselves as leaders, hence, give effective leadership through transparency honesty and selfless service.

“Detest and shun bribery and all forms of corruption and nepotism,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 1,566 corps members comprising 618 males and 948 females were sworn-in during the ceremony. (NAN)
