Towards ensuring a successful games for tertiary institutions, Ogun Government, on Thursday, inaugurated the 2022 Gateway Tertiary Institution Games (GATIG) Committee.
Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde, while speaking at the inauguration, said the games were conceived with the idea of bringing together the student populace in the state to compete for laurels for their schools.
He noted that the games was revived in 2021 by the Gov Dapo Abiodun administration, to develop sports and also breed talents for the state, that would compete at national and international sporting events.
Kehinde said the committee was expected to draw out modalities for the schools, to make it easy for them to participate in the games.
He urged them to see the task as part of their contribution to sport development in the state.
The commissioner further admonished the committee to perceive the games as a means of bringing the tertiary institutions in the state under the same roof, to complement efforts of the government in empowering the youth.
Responding, Chairman of the Committee, Mr Tunji Onatolu appreciated the present administration for reviving the games.
Onatolu, who was a former director of sports, said it would engage youths positively and divert their attention from social vices that could derail them from their studies.
Members of the committee include, Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Sport, Hon. Lamide Lawal, Directors in the Ministry, Directors at the state Sport Council and tertiary institutions in the state, as well as student leaders. (NAN)
