
The transfer of the electricity market is in compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeriaand the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended).
Inaugurating the committee in his office on Tuesday in Akure, Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa said that the committee’s principal mandate was to develop modalities for the improvement of electricity supply within the state.
He added that the committee would also ensure smooth transfer of authority from federal institutions to the state and enhance local governance and control over electricity for the benefit of the people of Ondo State.
“This committee is a vital step towards achieving our goal of a more efficient and locally controlled electricity regulatory market.
“By taking charge of our regulatory framework, we can better address the unique needs of our state and ensure a more reliable and sustainable power supply for our citizens.
“Having a substantial part of Ondo State in darkness is simply unacceptable,”he said.
Aiyedatiwa said the transition is expected to streamline regulatory processes, enhance accountability, and ultimately lead to improvements in electricity supply and distribution within Ondo State.
He said the committee will work closely with various stakeholders, including NERC, and the Benin Disco to ensure a smooth and effective handover.
The committee has Messrs Tunji Ariyomo as Chairman, while the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Johnson Alabi, will serve as the Vice Chairman.
Also in the committee are; former Regional Head of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Mrs Iyabo Adefemi, Director of Planning of the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC), Mr Olumayowa Ajumobi.
Other members are the State Coordinator of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB), Mr Stephen Bolawole, Secretary; while Mr Gbenga Akeju will represent the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) as member of the Committee.
Chairman of the committee, Ariyomo, responding on behalf of other members, thanked the governor for finding them worthy to serve the state.
He assured the governor and residents in the state that the committee would deliver on its assignment and justify the confidence reposed in it.
