Badagry (Lagos State), March 6, 2026 (NAN) The police on Friday arraigned a 47-year-old businesswoman, Bunmi Avoseh, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged N1,375,000 rice fraud.

The defendant, whose address is unknown, is being charged with fraud and stealing, to which she, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, ASP Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences between July and October 2025 at about 4.00 p.m. at Gbethromeh, Badagry, Lagos.

Ekpo said that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N1,375,000 from one Toyin Adeleke under the pretense of supplying her some bags of foreign rice.

“The defendant stole the money by converting it to her own use without her consent. She was later arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution,” he said.

The offences, according to him, contravene Sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum N1,000,000, with two sureties each in like sum.

Layeni, who said that one of the sureties must be a company director, adjourned the case till April 9 for mention.(NAN)
