The police in Lagos on Wednesday arraigned a 39-year-old woman, Johanah James, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting her caretaker.

The defendant, who lives at Low Cost Estate in Ibereko, Badagry, is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and assault, to which she has been found not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Clément Okuiomose, told the court that the defendant committed the offences at about 5:30 on April 12 at her residence in Badagry, Lagos.

Okuoimose said that James conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by slapping Mrs. Saidat Umakhihe, the complainant and caretaker of her apartment.

He said that the caretaker, also a lawyer, had gone on inspection of the estate when the defendant attacked her.

”The defendant assaulted the caretaker by biting one of her fingers, which injured her,” he said.

Okuoimose said that the offences contravened Sections 168 and 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. T. A. Popoola, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said that one of the sureties must be a community leader in Badagry and the other a civil servant over 50 years old.

Popoola adjourned the case until May 15 for mention.(NAN)
