The Rivers State Police Command has reported the successful arrest of 10 suspected kidnappers during a targeted operation in Igwuruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state on Saturday. The operation, led by the state Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed to comb bushes and dismantle a suspected kidnappers’ camp situated behind the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Igwuruta, on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, believed to be a hideout for criminals.
Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu was joined by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Adepoju Olugbenga, area commanders, heads of tactical units, Divisional Police Officers, and other command officers during the operation.
Following the raid, Olugbenga addressed the media, expressing concerns about the recent activities of suspected kidnappers in the Obiri-Ikwerre-Airport Road axis near the state capital. He revealed that over 12 makeshift tents in abandoned camps used by the suspected kidnappers were destroyed during the operation.
Olugbenga stated, “It is a routine exercise. We normally go on a show of strength once or twice weekly, and we mostly patrol vulnerable points where we feel we are having issues with hoodlums trying to disturb the peace of the state.”
Highlighting the importance of the operation in ensuring public safety, especially in areas prone to criminal activities, Olugbenga emphasized the significance of the Airport axis due to the presence of dignitaries, citizens, and foreigners. He assured the public that such operations would continue to maintain a secure environment.
Calling for support from law-abiding citizens, Olugbenga urged the public to provide useful information that could aid in identifying and dismantling criminal hideouts, as well as the apprehension of suspects. The police assured the community that efforts to combat crime would persist to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.
