Protest Erupts in Lagos as POWA Shopping Complex Faces Demolition Amidst Alleged Impersonation Scandal

LAGOS, Dec. 28, 2023 – Tension grips the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) Shopping Complex in Computer Village, Ikeja, as wives of police officers and traders staged a peaceful protest on Thursday against the looming demolition of the complex. The demonstration follows the alleged sealing of the complex by the state government, purportedly paving the way for the demolition.

Concerns have been raised by the officers’ wives and traders regarding a suspicious plan orchestrated by individuals falsely claiming association with the wife of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mrs. Elizabeth Egbetokun. These individuals are allegedly exploiting her name to carry out the demolition, prompting an outcry from the affected parties.

Our investigation reveals that a senior police officer is suspected to have colluded with a property developer, aiming to displace thousands of traders, including police officers’ wives, who operate businesses within the complex. Mr. Tobechukwu Maxwell, the immediate past chairman of the complex, expressed dismay over the proposed demolition, emphasizing that the plaza sustains thousands of families, including those of police officers.

Maxwell urgently appealed to Mrs. Egbetokun, the POWA President, to intervene and prevent the impostors from executing their plans. He also implored the IGP to use his influence to halt the demolition and identify those responsible for legal prosecution.

The complex, owned by widows of former police officers and serving officers, had previously faced a demolition threat in 2019. However, this time, the occupants were allegedly only informed to vacate without formal notice. Concerns have been raised that the developer and others intend to unlawfully dismantle the building and vandalize goods worth billions of naira.

Mrs. Abisola Azeez, the Iyaloja of Computer Village, disclosed that she was involved in the funding of the complex during its construction. She emphasized that the agreement with the developers was for a ten-year period, which has not yet elapsed. Azeez urged authorities to engage in dialogue for any necessary adjustments rather than resorting to eviction.

Mr. Tayo Shittu, the current chairman of Computer Dealers Association, raised alarm over individuals claiming to be sent by the IGP’s wife to execute the demolition. Shittu urged Mrs. Egbetokun to intervene and safeguard the interests of the traders and police officers’ wives.

In response to the escalating situation, a source from the police headquarters annex, Moloney Obalende, Lagos, revealed anonymously that the police authority is in discussions with the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, to address the issue.

As the saga unfolds, the affected parties anxiously await a resolution, hopeful that their plea for justice will be heeded to prevent the disruption of their livelihoods and the integrity of the POWA Shopping Complex.
