European champions Liverpool step into the competition having been drawn straight into the last four, just like South American representatives Flamengo.
Last night, the Reds squad of teenage players crashed out of the English League Cup quarterfinals 0-5 to Aston Villa, but the main squad will be expected to reach the final in Qatar in only their second appearance in this tournament. Liverpool lost 0-1 to São Paulo in the final 14 years ago.
The Anfield side’s opponents Monterrey met European opposition in this competition the last time they were here. And that was in 2012 when they lost to Chelsea 1-3 at this same stage but won the third-placed match 2-0 over then African champions Al-Ahly.
The victorious side tonight will face Flamengo in Saturday’s final while the losers will engage Asia’s Al-Hilal SFC in the bronze medal match.
