Bauchi, Feb. 25,2026 (NAN ) The Bauchi State Government on Wednesday commenced distribution of 89,795 bags of assorted food items as 2026 Ramadan and Sallah palliative programme.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government is targeting beneficiaries across the 20 Local Government Areas of the state.
The State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Hajara Wanka, disclosed this during the inauguration and distribution of the items to local government officials in Bauchi.
She said under the arrangement, each of the 20 local government areas would receive one trailer load of food commodities to cushion the effects of economic pressure during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to her, a breakdown of the figures shows that government distributed 25,535 bags of rice, 25,539 bags of maize, 11,970 bags of millet, 16,751 bags of sorghum, and 5,000 bags of sugar.
“The combined total of 89,795 bags underscores the scale of the intervention designed to reach thousands of households across urban and rural communities,” she said.
Wanka explained that the intervention covers both Ramadan and Sallah periods, noting that the initiative was approved by Gov. Bala Mohammed to ease hardship among residents.
The commissioner urged local government chairmen to ensure transparency and equitable distribution at the grassroots level.
She said that in addition to the 20 LGAs, religious bodies such as Jama’atu Nasril Islam and Christian Association of Nigeria, alongside selected groups, were listed among the beneficiaries.
NAN reports that all the Chairmen of the 20 councils were present to formally receive the items for onward distribution to their people.
Speaking on behalf of the chairmen, Alhaji Abdulkadir Dewu, chairman of Kirfi local government area, commended the governor for what he described as a large-scale intervention and assured that the commodities would be distributed judiciously to intended beneficiaries.(NAN)
