Ronaldo breaks Euro goalscoring record with Hungary double

Ronaldo netted twice in Portugal’s 3-0 victory over Hungary to take him to 11 goals in the Euros.

It takes him two ahead of French legend Michael Platini, who scored nine goals in just five games at Euro 1984.

The Juventus forward also became the first ever player to feature at five separate European Championships with his appearance in Budapest, as well as the only player to score in five consecutive tournaments.

It had been a frustrating night for Ronaldo and Portugal before Raphael Guerreiro put them ahead in the 84th minute.

And the Portuguese skipper made sure he’d take all the headlines as he netted from the penalty spot in the 87th minute, before rounding off the Portuguese’s victory with another strike five minutes later.

It was Ronaldo’s first appearance in the competition since he was forced off through injury as Portugal beat France 1-0 to lift the trophy in 2016 and he now holds a multitude of records.

As well as all the ones he broke in Budapest, he is already the leading appearance maker with 22 across five editions.

His double against Hungary has taken him to within one of Miroslav Klose’s record (19) for the most goals scored by a European player at the World Cup and Euros.

But arguably even greater than that is the fact Ronaldo is now just three behind Ali Daei’s world record of 109 international goals, the Iranian scoring those in a 13-year period from 1993.
