The Wife of Anambra  Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo has called for increased awareness, early testing and improved access to quality healthcare services for persons living with Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD).

Soludo, also the Founder of Healthy Living initiative, made the call on Friday in a message to commemorate the 2026 World Sickle Cell Day, observed every June 19.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Sickle Cell Day is observed to raise awareness about the disease and advocate improved patient care, research and support for millions of people affected by the condition worldwide.

The 2026 commemoration had the theme:  “Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Disease”.

She expressed solidarity with individuals and families affected by the condition.

According to the governor’s  wife, sickle cell disorder is a health challenge that requires medical attention, understanding, compassion and sustained support.

“I urge the public to embrace early testing and make informed health decisions.

“Greater access to quality healthcare services will help reduce the burden of the disease and improve the quality of life of those living with it,” she said.

She also paid tribute to persons battling the disorder, describing them as resilient warriors whose courage deserved recognition and support.

“Today, we honor the resilience of warriors battling sickle cell disorder every day and reaffirm our commitment to building a society where no one is left behind because of a health condition,” she said. (NAN)
