Lagos, February 15, 2024 – The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, has made a significant leap in the latest FIFA men’s ranking released on Thursday, ascending 14 places to secure the 28th position globally.
This surge also positions the Super Eagles as the third-best team in Africa, a jump from their previous sixth position on the continent.
The latest ranking marks a historic milestone for the Nigerian team, achieving its highest position since May 2013.
The remarkable advancement can be attributed to the Super Eagles’ impressive performance in the recently concluded African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where they clinched the silver medal after finishing as runners-up.
Despite maintaining an unbeaten streak throughout the tournament, the Eagles fell short in the final, suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire.
In the wake of their success, Cote d’Ivoire has also experienced a rise in the rankings, climbing from 49th to 39th globally.
Meanwhile, Morocco and Senegal continue to lead the pack as the top-performing African teams.
Argentina retains its position as the world’s number one team in the latest ranking, followed closely by France and Brazil in the second and third positions, respectively.
The FIFA Men’s World Ranking serves as a comprehensive rating system established by football’s global governing body for national teams. It evaluates the performance of member teams based on their results in FIFA-recognized international matches, with points awarded accordingly.
The next edition of the FIFA world ranking is scheduled for release on April 4, 2024, offering further insights into the shifting landscape of international football.
