Suspected Fraudsters Impersonate Assassins to Extort Nigerian Journalist

Abeokuta, Nigeria  – A group of suspected fraudsters posing as hired assassins have attempted to extort N20 million from Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, the Founder of Penpushing Media, threatening to eliminate him unless he pays the demanded sum.

The extortion attempt began on Monday at approximately 7:30 a.m. when a man who identified himself as Femi Poly contacted Kayode-Adedeji via phone, claiming he and his gang had been commissioned to assassinate him but had reconsidered their decision due to his age.

“We have your photograph, and someone close to you assigned us to kill you,” the caller reportedly stated. “However, we observed that you are an elderly man and decided to give you a chance to save yourself by paying N20 million.”

When pressed for the identity of their alleged sponsor, the suspects insisted that they would only disclose the information after receiving the payment. “The person is a close associate who claimed to have issues with you. But can you keep it to yourself if we reveal their identity?” the caller added.

As the journalist expressed his inability to pay the sum, the gang gradually reduced their demand, first to N500,000, then to N150,000. When he continued to refuse, stating that he could only afford N10,000 at the time, the fraudsters provided an Access Bank account number (0002884692) under the name Aminu Adamu, instructing him to make the payment as an initial deposit.

Kayode-Adedeji has since reported the incident to law enforcement authorities. As of the time of this report, police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
