Social media relationship coaches have become influential voices among Nigerian youths, with their opinions often shaping conversations about love, marriage, and financial responsibilities in relationships.
Viral statements such as “Your girlfriend should not be billing you”, “An intentional man will simp for his woman,” and “Stay away from ladies for a brighter future” have generated widespread reactions online.
Among the statements that have attracted significant attention is a TikTok post attributed to Geh Geh, in which he said, “A girl in her surviving mood is not capable of loving you.
” Similarly, social media personality Saidaboj, during a widely circulated interview, said, “Twenty-four hours after a man takes your number, you should bill him to know if he is capable.
” These contrasting opinions have fueled heated debates across social media, with supporters describing them as practical relationship advice and critics arguing that they promote unhealthy expectations and stereotypes.
Some young Nigerians say these messages have helped them become more financially responsible, set healthier boundaries, and make better relationship choices.
Others, however, argue that constantly consuming one-sided relationship content has created unrealistic expectations, mistrust, and conflict between partners.
Reacting to these trends, some female social media users criticized the narrative that women should never rely on their partners financially. One user wrote, “A healthy relationship is about mutual support, not competition over who spends more.”
Another commented, “If a man truly loves his woman, supporting her shouldn’t be seen as a weakness.”
Meanwhile, some male users defended the messages, saying they encourage financial discipline and help young men avoid unhealthy relationships.
Many observers believe such messages have influenced discussions among Nigerian youths about what constitutes a healthy relationship and marriage.
While some young people say the advice has encouraged financial responsibility and self-worth, others argue it has contributed to mistrust, transactional dating, and unrealistic expectations between men and women.
Relationship experts continue to emphasize that healthy relationships are built on communication, mutual respect, trust, and shared values rather than one-size-fits-all advice shared on social media.
As social media continues to influence public opinion, relationship coaches are expected to remain central to discussions among Nigerian youths.
While many provide valuable perspectives, experts stress that successful relationships are built on communication, trust, respect, and understanding—not solely on viral online opinions.
