Trader Fatally Shot by Anti-touting Squad in Onitsha Market

Onitsha (Anambra), February 17, 2024 – The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the tragic shooting of a trader by operatives of the state anti-touting squad at the Science Equipment Market, Head Bridge, Onitsha.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, resulting in the death of one individual and leaving several others injured.

Ikenga, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), stated that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

“The commissioner of police has ordered the immediate transfer of a reported murder incident that happened at the Head Bridge market,” Ikenga affirmed.

Upon receiving the information, police officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Head Bridge, swiftly responded to the scene. There, they discovered a young man lying in a pool of blood, with another individual sustaining injuries.

“The victims were rushed to the hospital, where the doctor confirmed one dead,” Ikenga disclosed.

Additionally, the police recovered six expended cartridges from the scene, indicating the use of firearms during the altercation.

The tragic incident has sparked concerns among residents and traders in Onitsha, prompting calls for a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
