A tricyclist, Temitope Rotimi, 27, on Tuesday, appeared before a Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan, charged with assaulting an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) on duty.

Rotimi, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of unlawful assault and malicious damage instituted against him.

The court’s President, Mrs O.E. Owoseni granted the defendant N200,000 bail with two reliable sureties in like sum, who must be blood relatives.

Owoseni added that the sureties must each provide their National Identification Number to the court.

Subsequently, she adjourned the case until June 18 for trial.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Ayeni, informed the court that the defendant committed the crime on April 21, at Adelabu Market,  Ibadan, Oyo State.

Ayeni said that Rotimi was arrested after assaulting an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Farrok Abimbola, with an object.

He added that the defendant also maliciously damaged Abimbola’s Samsung mobile phone, valued at N1.1 million, by riding his tricycle over it.

Ayeni said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 412 and 451 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38 Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000 (NAN)
