The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr Filippo Grandi, on Monday, arrived in Kabul to assess the country’s acute humanitarian needs and the situation of about 3.5 million displaced Afghans.
Grandi made the announcement on Twitter upon his arrival at the Kabul International Airport.
He was welcomed by Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, the Taliban’s Acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriation and a prominent leader of the Haqqani network.
Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani is designated a global terrorist with a five-million-dollar bounty on him by the U.S. He is also on the UN’s Sanctions List for his links with al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
Earlier, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths visited the country, where he spoke with Taliban authorities on humanitarian issues.
The UN is set to convene in Geneva on an international aid conference for Afghanistan to prevent what Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls a “looming humanitarian catastrophe.”
