The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and its Japanese partners have donated advanced 3D prosthetic equipment to the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board (MRTB) to strengthen rehabilitation services and innovation in Nigeria.
The equipment was officially handed over during a high-level ceremony hosted by the MRTB on Friday in Abuja, marking another significant step toward improving prosthetics, orthotics practice and rehabilitation technology across Nigeria.
Prof. Rufai Ahmad, Registrar of the Board, described the donation as a major milestone in advancing rehabilitation technology and professional capacity development, while appreciating the partners for their confidence in the institution.
Ahmad reaffirmed MRTB’s commitment to ensuring successful implementation and sustainability of the project.
He added that the equipment would significantly improve training, research and service delivery within Nigeria’s rehabilitation and healthcare sectors.
“This project will enhance rehabilitation technology and strengthen the capacity of professionals in prosthetics and orthotics practice across the country,” Ahmad said, noting that it would further improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
Mr Philbert Johnson, Director and UNIDO Country Representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS, said the initiative represented an important connection between humanitarian and developmental efforts aimed at supporting vulnerable populations through rehabilitation services.
“It is a pleasure to be part of this project which will contribute immensely to strengthening rehabilitation services in Nigeria,” Johnson said while highlighting the programme’s expected impact on healthcare delivery nationwide.
Pakouyowou said the partnership reflected a strong commitment toward innovation and improved rehabilitation services in Nigeria, while emphasizing the importance of collaboration in advancing healthcare technology and professional capacity development nationwide.
Another highlight of the event was the presentation of a newly developed 3D-Printed Transtibial Socket to the Registrar, showcasing the institution’s growing capacity in digital manufacturing and innovative prosthetic solutions for rehabilitation services.
The delegation also toured the facility to inspect ongoing activities and technological advancements at the centre, highlighting efforts aimed at strengthening rehabilitation technology, improving healthcare delivery and promoting innovation within Nigeria’s rehabilitation sector.(NAN)
