GOMBE, Nigeria, January 12, 2024: The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Gombe State, Mohammed Mu’azu, has issued a stern warning to men, urging them to be cautious in their relationships and emphasising the importance of verifying the HIV status of potential partners.
In a recent briefing on the Command’s 2023 activities, Mr. Mu’azu disclosed the arrest of an 85-year-old man involved in illicit relationships with numerous young girls. Following medical examinations, both the elderly man and his four wives were confirmed to be HIV positive.
Mr. Mu’azu expressed concern over the high prevalence rate of HIV in Gombe State, likening it to a “time bomb.” He urged men to be vigilant and verify the HIV status of their partners, especially those in the window period.
The Commandant also highlighted the challenges faced by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) advocating for same-sex relationships and marriage, an issue prevalent in the state. Notably, 76 individuals were recently arrested for allegedly hosting a “gay party” in Gombe State last year.
This emphasis on HIV prevention aligns with national efforts. According to the 2019 Nigerian HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS), approximately 1.9 million Nigerians are affected by the disease. In 2022, there was a reported decrease in new HIV infections, dropping from 103,404 cases in 2019 to 92,323 in 2021.
In 2023, the Nigerian government introduced key documents to guide the nation’s efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS by 2030, including the National HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan (2023-2027) and the Sustainability Pathway for National HIV Response (2023-2030). The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, emphasised the nation’s commitment to achieving global goals of epidemic control and ending HIV/AIDS by 2030.
