Lagos, Jan. 21, 2026 (NAN) The Lagos State Government is set to unlock the economic potential of the state’s waste management value chain, by revamping existing Transfer Loading Stations (TLS) and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).
The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.
He said that waste management challenges in Lagos were partly due to infrastructure gaps, noting that a rapidly growing megacity like Lagos, required continuous upgrades of its waste transfer and recovery systems.
According to him, the ongoing revamp would improve waste evacuation, increase material recovery, reduce pressure on disposal sites and create opportunities for private sector participation across the value chain.
He said that the initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to promoting recycling and supporting a circular economy.
Gbadegesin commended the efforts of Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, describing their task as difficult but essential to maintaining environmental cleanliness across the state.
He assured residents that LAWMA would continue to provide back-up services to support PSP operators in challenging cases.
The LAWMA boss described illegal dumping as an irresponsible waste disposal practice often associated with informal settlements and unapproved locations.
He warned that such acts posed serious risks to public health and the environment.
LAWMA reiterated its call on residents, to properly bag their waste, register with accredited PSP operators and pay for waste collection services, to ensure efficient service delivery.
Meanwhile, he disclosed that LAWMA was piloting a waste-to-energy project at Ikosi-Ketu Market, where a biodigester was being used to convert organic waste into energy.
He said that the innovation demonstrates the practical benefits of a circular economy approach.
He also hinted that the authority would maintain a firm stance against environmental infractions, adding that efforts to prosecute offenders would be intensified.
Gbadegesin urged residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping and report environmental violations to relevant authorities.(NAN)
