Woman, 65, arraigned for allegedly obtaining N554,000 by fraud

A 65-year-old woman, Nafisat Opeloyeru on Friday stood in the dock of a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan ,over alleged N554,000 debt.

Opeloyeruu is standing trial on a one-count charge of obtaining by false pretence.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court’s President, Mrs O.E. Owoseni admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

The court held that the sureties must each possess a National Identification Number (NIN) as well as an  Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC’s) receipt.

She adjourned the case until July 30, for trial.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ayodele Ayeni had told the court that the defendant committed the offence between 2023 and 2026, at Gbagi Market Ibadan, Oyo State.

He alleged that the defendant took different kinds of clothe fabrics from a complainant, one Madam Iyabo Omotoso  with a promise to pay later.

He alleged that the defendant refused to pay the money on the agreed date adding that all efforts to recover the debt had proved abortive.

The offence contravenes the provision of section 419 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State. (NAN)
